Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Tongs or a spatula
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Plate lined with a paper towel

Ingredients

Option 1: Using Frozen Checkers Fries

  • 1 bag about 28 oz / 800 g frozen Checkers or Rally’s seasoned fries
  • Cooking spray or 1 teaspoon oil optional, for extra crisp

Option 2: Homemade Checkers-Style Fries

  • 3 large russet potatoes about 1.5 lbs / 680 g
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil

Seasoning Blend

  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your air fryer

  • I always preheat. It makes a difference. Set your air fryer to 380°F and let it heat for about 3 to 5 minutes. Hot air from the start means crispier fries.

Step 2: Prepare the fries

  • For frozen fries, take them straight from the freezer. Do not thaw.
  • For homemade fries, cut potatoes into thick sticks. Rinse to remove excess starch, pat very dry, then toss with oil and seasoning.
  • Dry potatoes are key. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness.

Step 3: Load the basket

  • Add fries in a single layer if possible. Crowding leads to steaming, and we want frying vibes, not soggy sadness. Work in batches if needed.

Step 4: Air fry

  • Cook at 380°F for 12 to 15 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through. For extra crispiness, go up to 400°F for the last 2 minutes.

Step 5: Taste and adjust

  • This is chef instinct time. Taste one. Add salt if needed. Maybe a pinch more paprika. Make them yours.
