Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Citrus juicer
  • Sharp knife
  • Small cutting board
  • Measuring jigger or measuring spoons
  • Margarita glass or rocks glass
  • Small plate for salt or sugar rim
  • Ice cube tray or ice bucket

Ingredients

  • 4 oz silver tequila
  • 2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz orange liqueur such as Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 4 thin jalapeno slices
  • 1 tablespoon agave syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • Coarse salt for rim
  • Lime wedges for garnish

Optional additions:

  • Extra jalapeno slices for garnish
  • Tajin seasoning for spicy rim

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Glass

  • Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass. Dip the rim into coarse salt spread on a plate. Set the glasses aside while you prepare the cocktail.

Step 2: Slice the Jalapeno

  • Using a sharp knife, cut fresh jalapeno into thin slices. If you prefer a milder drink, remove the seeds before adding the slices.

Step 3: Muddle the Jalapeno

  • Place the jalapeno slices into a cocktail shaker. Gently muddle them to release their oils and spicy flavor.

Step 4: Add the Liquids

  • Pour in the tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, and agave syrup.

Step 5: Add Ice

  • Fill the shaker with ice cubes. Secure the lid tightly.

Step 6: Shake

  • Shake the cocktail vigorously for about 15 seconds. This chills the drink and blends the flavors together.

Step 7: Strain and Serve

  • Fill the prepared glasses with fresh ice. Strain the margarita into the glasses.

Step 8: Garnish

  • Add a lime wedge or a fresh jalapeno slice on top for garnish. Serve immediately.
