Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula or wooden spoon.
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread about 12–14 cups, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 oz cream cheese cut into small cubes
  • 2 cups blueberries fresh or frozen
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for greasing the baking dish

Optional Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon lemon zest
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread Base

  • Grease your baking dish generously with butter. Add the bread cubes and spread them out evenly. You want little gaps so the custard can soak into every piece.

Step 2: Add Cream Cheese and Blueberries

  • Scatter the cream cheese cubes over the bread, followed by the blueberries. Don’t worry about perfection—rustic is beautiful here.

Step 3: Make the Custard

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. The mixture should smell warm and sweet, like a bakery on a slow morning.

Step 4: Pour and Soak

  • Slowly pour the custard over the bread. Press gently with a spatula to help everything soak. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes, or cover and refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.

Step 5: Bake to Golden Perfection

  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45–55 minutes, until the top is lightly golden and the center feels set but soft. Your kitchen will smell incredible—trust me.

Step 6: Rest and Serve

  • Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the slices hold together and lets the flavors settle.
