Equipment

  • Sharp kitchen knife
  • Cutting board
  • Toaster, grill pan, or sandwich press
  • Small bowl (if mixing pesto or spreading)
  • Spoon or butter knife for spreading
  • Serving plate

Ingredients

  • 4 slices rustic sourdough or ciabatta bread
  • 200 g fresh mozzarella cheese sliced
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes sliced
  • 4 tablespoons basil pesto
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • A handful of fresh basil leaves
  • Optional: balsamic glaze for drizzling

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare your bread

  • Start by slicing your bread if it’s not already sliced. Lightly brush the outer sides with olive oil. This helps create a beautiful golden crust when toasted.

Step 2: Toast the bread

  • Place the bread on a grill pan, toaster, or sandwich press. Toast until it turns golden brown and slightly crisp on the outside. This usually takes about 2–3 minutes per side depending on your heat.

Step 3: Spread the pesto

  • Once your bread is warm and slightly crisp, spread a generous layer of basil pesto on the inner sides. Don’t be shy here—this is where a lot of flavor comes from in the Caprese Sandwich with Pesto & Mozzarella Recipe.

Step 4: Layer the mozzarella

  • Place fresh mozzarella slices evenly on one side of the bread. Make sure the cheese is spread out so every bite has that creamy texture.

Step 5: Add tomatoes

  • Layer fresh tomato slices over the mozzarella. Sprinkle lightly with salt and black pepper to enhance their natural sweetness.

Step 6: Add basil leaves

  • Tuck in fresh basil leaves between the layers. This adds fragrance and freshness that defines the Caprese Sandwich with Pesto & Mozzarella Recipe.

Step 7: Close and press

  • Place the top slice of bread over the filling and gently press it down. If you like, you can grill it again for 1–2 minutes to help everything melt slightly together.

Step 8: Slice and serve

  • Cut the sandwich diagonally and serve immediately while it’s warm and fresh.

Notes

  • Always use room temperature mozzarella for better texture.
  • Don’t overload the sandwich with too many tomatoes, or it may become soggy.
  • Lightly toasting the bread makes a huge difference in flavor and structure.
  • Homemade pesto takes this sandwich to another level, but store-bought works just fine.
  • If you love a tangy kick, a drizzle of balsamic glaze is a game changer.
