Equipment

  • Mixing bowl (medium or large)
  • Hand whisk or spoon
  • 6-inch cake pan (or muffin tin for cupcakes)
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Spatula
  • Cooling rack
  • Optional: piping bag for frosting
  • Small bowls for toppings

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour for dogs with sensitive stomachs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter unsalted, unsweetened
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted coconut oil
  • 2 eggs

Frosting Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt unsweetened
  • 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter

Optional Toppings:

  • Dog-friendly treats or biscuits
  • Small pieces of fruit like apple slices or blueberries
  • Shredded carrots or coconut flakes

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Pan

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line your cake pan with parchment paper or lightly grease with dog-safe oil. This ensures the cake doesn’t stick and makes cleanup easy.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and baking powder. Set aside.

Step 3: Mix Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, combine the applesauce, peanut butter, pumpkin puree, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Step 4: Combine Ingredients

  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until you have a smooth batter. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake soft and fluffy.

Step 5: Bake the Cake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Keep an eye on the cake to avoid overbaking.
  • Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely on a cooling rack before adding frosting.

Step 6: Prepare the Frosting

  • In a small bowl, mix the Greek yogurt and peanut butter until smooth. Adjust consistency by adding more yogurt or peanut butter if needed.

Step 7: Frost the Cake

  • Once cooled, spread the frosting evenly on top of the cake. For a more festive look, use a piping bag to create swirls or patterns.

Step 8: Decorate and Serve

  • Decorate with dog-friendly toppings like small fruit pieces, shredded carrots, or dog biscuits. Arrange creatively to make the cake visually appealing and fun for your dog.
  • Serve in small portions suitable for your dog’s size. Supervise your dog while eating to ensure they enjoy it safely.

Notes

  • Always use unsalted, unsweetened peanut butter
  • Substitute oat flour for wheat flour for dogs with allergies
  • Ensure the cake is fully cooled before frosting
  • Serve in moderation, especially for smaller dogs
  • Decorate creatively to make the cake more appealing
