Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Deep pan or fryer for chicken
  • Tongs
  • Wire rack
  • Paper towels
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

For the Fried Chicken

  • 2 large chicken breasts halved into 4 fillets
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying

For the French Toast

  • 8 slices thick bread brioche or challah works best
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter for cooking

For Assembly

  • Maple syrup
  • Butter optional
  • Hot sauce optional
  • Powdered sugar optional

Instructions

Step 1: Marinate the Chicken

  • In a bowl, combine buttermilk, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne. Add the chicken fillets and let them marinate for at least 20 minutes (or up to overnight for deeper flavor).

Step 2: Prepare the Coating

  • Place flour in a shallow dish. Remove the chicken from the marinade and dredge each piece in flour, pressing lightly to create a coating.

Step 3: Fry the Chicken

  • Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the chicken pieces for about 6–8 minutes per side, or until golden brown and fully cooked. Transfer to a wire rack lined with paper towels.

Step 4: Make the French Toast Batter

  • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.

Step 5: Cook the French Toast

  • Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, then cook until golden brown on both sides.

Step 6: Assemble the Sandwich

  • Place a piece of fried chicken on one slice of French toast. Add butter, drizzle maple syrup, and a splash of hot sauce if you like. Top with another slice of French toast.

Step 7: Serve Immediately

  • Serve warm while the chicken is crispy and the toast is soft.

Notes

  • Use thick bread like brioche for a rich texture
  • Don’t skip the buttermilk marinade—it keeps the chicken juicy
  • Fry chicken at medium heat to avoid burning the coating
  • Let the chicken rest before assembling to keep it crispy
  • Add syrup just before serving to prevent sogginess
