Equipment

  • Mixing bowls (one large, one medium)
  • Whisk
  • Silicone spatula or wooden spoon.
  • 8x8-inch square baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack (optional but helpful)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Pan

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line your 8x8-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving a little overhang so you can easily lift the bars out later.

Step 2: Mix the Wet Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Whisk until the mixture looks smooth and glossy.
  • This step is important—it helps dissolve the sugar slightly and creates that signature chewy texture.

Step 3: Add Egg and Vanilla

  • Crack in the egg and add vanilla extract. Whisk again until the mixture becomes slightly thicker and silky.

Step 4: Combine Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 5: Bring It All Together

  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a spatula. Don’t overmix—just combine until you don’t see dry flour anymore.

Step 6: Add the Good Stuff

  • Fold in chocolate chips and walnuts (if using). This is where the magic starts to build.

Step 7: Spread the Batter

  • Transfer the batter into your prepared pan and spread it evenly. It will be thick—that’s exactly what you want.

Step 8: Bake

  • Bake for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden and set. The center should still feel slightly soft.

Step 9: Cool Completely

  • Let the bars cool completely in the pan before slicing. This helps them set and gives you clean, neat squares.
