Equipment

  • Baking dish (9x13 inch works well)
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Brush for butter (optional)
  • Aluminum foil (optional)
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 12 Hawaiian sweet rolls King’s Hawaiian recommended
  • 12 slices deli ham
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese or cheddar
  • ½ cup butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds optional
  • 1 tablespoon minced onion optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Rolls

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, keeping the tops and bottoms together. Place the bottom halves in your baking dish.

Step 2: Layer Ham and Cheese

  • Place a slice of ham on each bottom roll, then top with a slice of cheese. Don’t be shy — more cheese equals more melty goodness.

Step 3: Assemble the Sandwiches

  • Place the top halves of the rolls over the ham and cheese. Press lightly to keep them snug.

Step 4: Make the Butter Mixture

  • In a small bowl, combine melted butter, Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, and minced onion (if using). Whisk until blended.

Step 5: Brush the Rolls

  • Brush the butter mixture generously over the tops of the rolls. This adds flavor and gives the tops a golden, glossy finish.

Step 6: Bake

  • Cover the rolls with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 5-7 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese is melted.

Step 7: Serve

  • Let the rolls cool for 5 minutes before serving. These are best enjoyed warm when the cheese is still gooey and melty.
