Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Heat-safe mug
  • Cutting board
  • Knife (for chopping chocolate)

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream optional but highly recommended
  • 3 oz dark chocolate chopped (60–70% cocoa)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp sugar adjust to taste
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Cocoa powder dusting
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg

Instructions
 

Warm the milk and cream

  • In a saucepan over medium-low heat, add milk and cream. Warm gently. Do not boil.

Whisk in cocoa and sugar

  • Add cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Whisk until fully dissolved and smooth.

Add the chocolate

  • Stir in chopped chocolate. Lower the heat and stir slowly until melted.

Finish with vanilla

  • Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract.

Serve immediately

  • Pour into mugs. Add toppings. Sip slowly.
