Equipment

  • Large pot or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Can opener
  • Ladle (for serving)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 15 oz kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can 15 oz black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Optional toppings (highly recommended):

  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Sliced green onions

Instructions

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. This step builds the base of flavor.

Step 2: Brown the Beef

  • Add the ground beef to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Make sure there are no large chunks left. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 3: Add Tomatoes and Beans

  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, kidney beans, and black beans. Mix everything well so the flavors begin to combine.

Step 4: Season the Chili

  • Add chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to evenly distribute the spices.

Step 5: Simmer and Develop Flavor

  • Pour in the beef broth and bring the chili to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the deeper the flavor becomes.

Step 6: Taste and Adjust

  • Taste your chili and adjust seasoning if needed. You can add more salt, spice, or even a pinch of sugar to balance acidity.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

  • Ladle the chili into bowls and top with cheese, sour cream, and fresh herbs. Serve hot and enjoy every comforting bite.

Notes

  • Let it simmer longer for deeper flavor
  • Use good-quality canned tomatoes
  • Don’t skip the tomato paste—it adds richness
  • Taste as you go and adjust seasoning
  • Make it a day ahead—the flavor gets even better
