Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Small whisk or fork
  • Non-stick frying pan or grill pan
  • Tongs or spatula
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Plate lined with paper towel (optional)

Ingredients

  • 250 g halloumi cheese sliced into 1 cm thick pieces
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes optional
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon honey optional
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Halloumi

  • Remove the halloumi from its packaging and pat it dry thoroughly. This step is small but important—it helps the cheese crisp up properly when cooked.
  • Slice the cheese into even pieces. Uniform thickness ensures that all slices cook at the same rate.

Step 2: Make the Marinade

  • In a mixing bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, thyme, chili flakes, black pepper, and honey. Whisk until everything is well blended.

Step 3: Marinate the Cheese

  • Add the halloumi slices to the marinade and gently coat each piece. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes. If you have extra time, letting it marinate longer enhances the flavor even more.

Step 4: Heat the Pan

  • Place a non-stick pan over medium heat. Allow it to heat properly before adding the cheese.

Step 5: Cook the Halloumi

  • Place the slices in the pan without overcrowding. Cook each side for about 3–4 minutes until golden brown and slightly crispy.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve

  • Transfer to a plate, sprinkle with fresh parsley, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Always dry the halloumi before marinating
  • Don’t rush the marination time
  • Use medium heat for even cooking
  • Avoid flipping too often—let it form a crust
  • Serve immediately for best texture
