Ingredients
  

For the Beef

  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef (80/20 works best)
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil if beef is lean
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Sauce

  • cup soy sauce low sodium preferred
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

To Finish

  • 4 green onions sliced (white and green parts)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  • Drain excess fat if needed.
  • Add garlic, ginger, and black pepper. Stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Pour in the sauce mixture and stir well.
  • Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 5–7 minutes until thick and glossy.
  • Stir in green onions and sesame oil.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning.
  • Serve hot over rice or noodles.
