For the Beef
- 1 lb 450 g ground beef (80/20 works best)
- 1 tablespoon neutral oil if beef is lean
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Sauce
- ⅓ cup soy sauce low sodium preferred
- ½ cup brown sugar packed
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
To Finish
- 4 green onions sliced (white and green parts)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and cornstarch. Set aside.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
Drain excess fat if needed.
Add garlic, ginger, and black pepper. Stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Pour in the sauce mixture and stir well.
Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 5–7 minutes until thick and glossy.
Stir in green onions and sesame oil.
Taste and adjust seasoning.
Serve hot over rice or noodles.
