Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Meat mallet or rolling pin
  • Mixing bowls
  • Three shallow dishes (for breading)
  • Toothpicks or kitchen twine
  • Large skillet
  • Baking dish
  • Tongs
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 8 slices deli ham thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese or mozzarella for a milder taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs panko for extra crunch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Optional but lovely additions:

  • A pinch of dried thyme or parsley
  • A squeeze of lemon for brightness

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken

  • Place the chicken breasts on a cutting board. Cover them lightly with plastic wrap and gently pound them until they are even in thickness. This step is simple but important—it ensures even cooking and makes rolling much easier.

Step 2: Add the Filling

  • Lay two slices of ham over each chicken breast, followed by one slice of cheese. Don’t overfill—just enough to create that perfect cheesy center.

Step 3: Roll and Secure

  • Carefully roll the chicken tightly from one side. Secure each roll with toothpicks so it stays intact during cooking.

Step 4: Prepare the Breading Station

  • Set up three bowls:
  • One with flour
  • One with beaten eggs mixed with milk
  • One with breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika

Step 5: Coat the Chicken

  • Roll each chicken piece in flour, dip into the egg mixture, then coat generously with breadcrumbs. Press lightly so the coating sticks well.

Step 6: Sear for Flavor

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Lightly brown each chicken roll on all sides. This step builds flavor and gives that beautiful golden crust.

Step 7: Bake to Perfection

  • Transfer the chicken into a baking dish. Drizzle melted butter over the top and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes until cooked through.

Step 8: Rest and Slice

  • Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before slicing. When you cut into it, you’ll see that gorgeous melted cheese center—honestly, my favorite moment.

Notes

  • Pound chicken evenly for consistent cooking
  • Don’t overstuff—less is more here
  • Chill the rolls for 10 minutes before breading if they feel loose
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch
  • Always let the chicken rest before slicing
