Equipment

  • Large heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Blender or immersion blender (optional for smooth texture)
  • Sterilized jars for storing the pear butter

Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled cored, and chopped pears (about 6–7 medium pears)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar adjust to taste based on pear sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pears

  • Peel, core, and chop the pears into small chunks. Measure out 6 cups. The uniform size helps them cook evenly.

Step 2: Cook the Pears

  • Place the chopped pears in a large heavy-bottomed pot. Add sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Stir to combine. Cook over medium heat until the pears release their juices, about 10–15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 3: Blend (Optional)

  • If you want a smooth pear butter, use an immersion blender directly in the pot or transfer in batches to a blender. For a rustic, slightly chunky texture, skip this step.

Step 4: Reduce

  • Lower the heat and simmer gently for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pear mixture thickens to a spreadable consistency. The aroma during this step is heavenly—the kitchen will smell like fall in a jar.

Step 5: Add Lemon Juice

  • Stir in lemon juice and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Taste and adjust sweetness or spices if needed.

Step 6: Store

  • Spoon the pear butter into sterilized jars. Let cool completely before sealing. Refrigerate for up to 3 weeks or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

  • Use ripe pears for maximum natural sweetness.
  • Stir frequently during the reduction phase to prevent sticking or burning.
  • Adjust sugar according to the sweetness of your pears.
  • Blend for smooth texture or leave slightly chunky for a rustic feel.
  • Store in sterilized jars to extend shelf life.
