Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Toaster or skillet (for buns)

Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional

For Serving:

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter for toasting buns

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Beef

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for about 6–8 minutes until no pink remains. Drain excess grease if necessary.

Step 2: Add Vegetables

  • Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the pan. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3: Build the Sauce

  • Add ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes. Stir everything together until well combined.

Step 4: Simmer

  • Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 15–20 minutes. Stir occasionally. The sauce will thicken and coat the beef beautifully. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 5: Toast the Buns

  • Spread butter lightly on the inside of each bun. Toast them in a skillet until golden brown. This step keeps the buns from getting soggy.

Step 6: Assemble

  • Spoon a generous amount of sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom bun. Place the top bun over it and serve immediately.
  • Get ready for delicious messiness.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for best flavor.
  • Chop vegetables finely for even texture.
  • Simmer long enough to thicken properly.
  • Toast the buns to prevent sogginess.
  • Taste before serving and adjust seasoning.
