Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan for cooking seafood and aromatics
  • Medium saucepan for cooking rice
  • Mixing bowls for preparing ingredients
  • Wooden spoon or spatula for stirring
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Small bowl for seasoning mix
  • Serving spoon
  • Optional: citrus squeezer for fresh lemon juice

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups long-grain rice
  • 1/2 pound cooked shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 pound cooked crab meat flaked
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup bell peppers chopped (optional for color and flavor)
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken or seafood broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the rice

  • In a medium saucepan, bring the chicken or seafood broth to a boil. Add the rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until tender and the liquid is absorbed, about 18–20 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside. Cooking the rice in broth rather than water enhances the overall flavor, giving each grain a subtle richness that complements the seafood.

Step 2: Sauté aromatics

  • In a large skillet, heat butter or olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, bell peppers (if using), and minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant and translucent, about 3–4 minutes. The gentle sautéing releases the natural sweetness of the onions and peppers, creating a flavorful base for the seafood.

Step 3: Add spices and seasoning

  • Sprinkle in smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to coat the aromatics. This step layers in warmth and a subtle smoky flavor that makes the dish more complex and inviting.

Step 4: Add the seafood

  • Gently add the shrimp and crab meat to the skillet. Stir carefully to avoid breaking up the crab too much. Allow the seafood to warm through and absorb the flavors of the sautéed vegetables and spices. Shrimp should remain tender, and the crab should maintain its delicate texture.

Step 5: Combine with rice

  • Add the cooked rice to the skillet and mix gently. Ensure each grain is coated with the buttery, seasoned mixture and the seafood is evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. The rice will absorb the flavors from the seafood and aromatics, resulting in a cohesive, flavorful dish.

Step 6: Finish with herbs and citrus

  • Sprinkle fresh parsley over the top and serve with lemon wedges. The parsley adds a fresh, vibrant note, while the lemon juice brightens the dish and balances the richness of the seafood and butter.

Notes

  • Use fresh or high-quality frozen seafood for the best flavor.
  • Don’t overcook the shrimp—they should remain tender and juicy.
  • Stir gently to avoid breaking up the crab meat.
  • Cook the rice in broth rather than water for added flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning gradually; seafood is delicate and can be overwhelmed by salt or spice.
  • Serve immediately for optimal taste and texture.
