Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Hand mixer or whisk
  • Rolling pin (if needed)
  • Baking tray
  • Parchment paper
  • Sharp knife or pizza cutter
  • Spoon or small spatula
  • Pastry brush
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
  • 150 g cream cheese softened
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup strawberry jam or preserves
  • 6 –8 fresh strawberries sliced
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar optional, for dusting

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Tray

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.

Step 2: Make the Cream Cheese Filling

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and creamy. The texture should be soft and spreadable, without lumps.

Step 3: Prepare the Puff Pastry

  • Roll out the puff pastry slightly on a floured surface if needed. Cut the sheet into equal squares. Each square will form one danish.

Step 4: Shape the Hearts

  • Using a knife, make small cuts along two edges of each square without cutting all the way through. Gently fold the cut sections inward to create a heart shape. Don’t worry if they’re not perfect—each one has its own charm.

Step 5: Add the Filling

  • Spoon a small amount of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each pastry. Top with strawberry jam and a few slices of fresh strawberries.

Step 6: Egg Wash

  • In a small bowl, beat the egg with milk. Brush this mixture over the edges of the pastry to give it a golden finish when baked.

Step 7: Bake

  • Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 16–18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Step 8: Cool and Serve

  • Remove from the oven and allow the danishes to cool slightly on a rack. Dust with powdered sugar if desired before serving.

Notes

  • Keep your puff pastry cold. Warm pastry won’t puff properly.
  • Don’t overfill. Too much filling can cause the pastry to collapse.
  • Use parchment paper for even baking and easy cleanup.
  • Watch closely in the last few minutes—pastry can brown quickly.
