Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • Heat-safe spatula
  • Small bowl (optional)
  • Airtight container for storage

Ingredients

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese sharp works best
  • 2 tablespoons jalapeño juice from jarred jalapeños
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 –2 tablespoons milk to thin, if needed

Instructions

Step 1: Melt the Cheese Gently

  • Add the shredded cheddar cheese to a small saucepan over low heat. Stir slowly until the cheese starts to melt. Keep the heat low—this prevents grainy texture.

Step 2: Build the Creamy Base

  • Once the cheese is mostly melted, whisk in the mayonnaise and sour cream. Keep stirring until smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Add the Flavor Boosters

  • Pour in the jalapeño juice and white vinegar. These two ingredients bring the tang that makes Lava Sauce taste authentic.

Step 4: Spice It Up

  • Add chili powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Whisk well until fully combined.

Step 5: Adjust the Texture

  • If the sauce feels too thick, add milk one tablespoon at a time until you reach a smooth, pourable consistency.

Step 6: Cool and Taste

  • Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Taste and adjust spice or salt if needed.
  • That’s it. You just made Taco Bell Lava Sauce at home.
